Carnival in Malta & Gozo
Carnival is celebrated throughout various localities around the islands but the most famous one is that held in Nadur, Gozo. It is a completely different carnival where no rules apply. It is a people’s carnival where the streets of Nadur are filled up with creatures wearing all types of costumes, most of which outrageous. The spontaneity of this carnival made it quite unique and one of the best carnivals in Europe with regards to this aspect. It is visited not only by the Gozitans but attracts many Maltese people that cross over to Gozo just to experience it. Nadur hosted the 25th Silver Jubilee FECC Carnival City Congress in 2005. Carnival is also especially celebrated in the capital cities of Valletta in Malta and Victoria in Gozo where several costume competitions are organised together with dance and various floats of all colours and shapes.
Carnival in Nadur is celebrated mainly in St. Peter & St.Paul’s square and in December 13th street where the street will be bustling with atmosphere and all band clubs and bars packed up. This all starts after 20.00hrs of each evening. Carnival in Valletta is also very popular and well attended. Floats and parades fill the streets of Valletta and Floriana during the day and evenings. Several carnival dancing competitions are also held during the day mainly in the capital cities of Victoria and Valletta.
